Yes folks, this is real! This is not an Onion article! What to say about this? I am at my wit’s end. Mental illness is not real, according to Texas governor Gregg Abbot and he vetoed a Mental Health bill, “a bipartisan bill which would give more resources to medical professionals that help residents dealing with mental health problems. The bill in question was widely popular, supported by many large medical associations in the state and both political parties.” And to make this decision, he consulted Scientologists!
Even though I am an atheist, this makes me want to scream “Jesus, almighty Christ, god, what the hell is happening here?” How do people like this get to positions of power? How much damage do they do and how much damage like this can a civilized society absorb and still stay civilized???
And what about the people in Texas with mental illness who would have benefited from this bill? And what about treatment of people with mental illness, since apparently it doesn’t exist, how does one get treated for it?
The implications are vast and frightening, this amount of idiocy and stupidity is chillingly frightening!
I’m glad you told us it isn’t from the Onion, because it has that type of surreal edgy quality to it. Well, one more reason not to move to Texas. I hope YOU don’t live in TX??!!!

No, thank goodness I don’t live in Texas! We moved from Buffalo NY to Louisville KY a year and a half ago. Yes, isn’t this unbelievable!!! What can we do about it?

I was thinking maybe a Change.org petition, plus a Twitter campaign @(governor’s Twitter handle) with hashtag #MentalIllnessIsReal

I like it! Let’s do it!

OK need to think of a better hashtag and get the email of the governor. I write copy, so I’ll be happy to write the petition. We can publicize it on WP, do a FB page, and maybe turn it into something good for the anti-stigma movement.

I was just hunting around the web for articles on this, and it turns out that all it was, was a provision that people who end up in an ER or doctor’s office who appear to be a potential danger to themselves or others, could be held in the ER for four hours’observation. Big deal. In many states that triggers a 24 hour inpatient observation. It would be useful to see what NAMI is doing about this, if anything. Don’t want to reinvent the wheel, but on the other hand the more voices, the more influence.

But to veto it because there is no such thing as by as mental illness!!! That’s what gets me. Just like he appointed a woman to head his dept of education who wants the “other side” to evolution to be part in f the curriculum. God!!! I Sm just flabbergasted that this is happ now by my n the USA. The idioticifaction of this country!!!!

Texas is its own country, let’s not forget. It left the United States a number of presidents ago, and the governors have preserved the tacit secession. Just look at the penal system. Neck and neck with Arizona! Too bad, both have some pretty country, but you won’t find me there. Or Florida, or Missouri, or Mississippi…

His response to the election results made it abundantly clear that the only people who matter are rich white people. So why would he care about anyone that actually needs help? I get so sad because I’m a Texan through and through (Even if I live in the UK and am British as well), because gerrymandering and bullshit keeps putting people who need help down.
