Brain’s Dumped DNA May Lead to Stress, Depression – Scientific American

Very interesting! In stressful times, mitochondria ( our cellular powerhouses which have DNA) dump their DNA into the cellular cytoplasm from where it can find its way into the bloodstream. This DNA is perceived by the immune system as foreign and therefore the immune system mounts an inflammatory response to it. So the inflammatory component of diseases such as Alzheimer’s or depression may be explained by this! Very interesting, and adds to our understanding of what’s going on and may lead to novel therapies!

That is fascinating. So much is being learned about DNA. My psych used a DNA test that predicted what meds I’m most likely to respond to, since I’ve been med-resistant for so long. One was exorbitantly out of my price range, the other used to send me into manic episodes, and the one I ended up trying, Pristiq, is so far not very helpful. I’m beginning to wonder if that particular test wasn’t very accurate.
