Brain’s Dumped DNA May Lead to Stress, Depression – Scientific American

Very interesting! In stressful times, mitochondria ( our cellular powerhouses which have DNA) dump their DNA into the cellular cytoplasm from where it can find its way into the bloodstream. This DNA is perceived by the immune system as foreign and therefore the immune system mounts an inflammatory response to it. So the inflammatory component of diseases such as Alzheimer’s or depression may be explained by this! Very interesting, and adds to our understanding of what’s going on and may lead to novel therapies!

Another way to distinguish bipolar disorder from depression. Using MRI’s to look at the amygdala as people were processing faces showing different emotions showed that there are differences in amygdala activity between people who have bipolar disorder and depression.

“In people with bipolar disorder, the left side of the amygdala is less active and less connected with other parts of the brain than in people with depression.”

It is important to get the right diagnosis as treatment for bipolar disorder and depression is different and it can be deleterious to treat people with bipolar disorder as if they have depression.
